Freshwater cultured pearls are grown inside freshwater mussels through a cultivation process developed in the early 20th century, primarily in China, where nucleation techniques allow multiple pearls to form within a single mussel. This method made genuine pearls widely accessible in a way natural, wild-harvested pearls never were, without altering the pearl's composition or luster.
