Most jewelry is bought on an ordinary afternoon. The pieces people keep for fifty years tend to arrive on a particular day instead: a wedding morning, a fortieth anniversary dinner, the week a new baby comes home. Years later, the stone is how that day gets remembered.

Some gemstones have been tied to those days for generations. Ruby belongs to the fortieth anniversary and sapphire to the forty-fifth, and pearls have been part of wedding dressing for longer than anyone in the family can recall. Other choices are personal, like a child's birthstone or the color a partner always reaches for.

So we went through the calendar one occasion at a time, with the stone tradition suggests for each and a few pieces we would actually give.

The short version

Anniversaries have their own stones. Pearl marks 30 years, ruby 40, sapphire 45, emerald 55 and diamond 60.

Weddings lean on pearl and diamond. A blue sapphire is the classic "something blue."

Birthdays and births belong to birthstones. Garnet for January, amethyst for February, and on through the year.

Think past the day itself. A ring worn daily afterward needs a harder stone than earrings kept for evenings.

Why a Gemstone Holds On to a Day

Flowers are gone by the weekend, and even a wonderful dinner blurs into all the other dinners. A gemstone is worn against the skin and outlasts the people who gave it, so it carries a date for decades. Ask anyone about a ring they inherited and the story almost always begins with when it was given, and by whom.

Color does much of the remembering. A red stone at a winter party, a blue one on a wedding day, green for a spring birthday: the shade and the occasion stick together. Choosing by occasion also helps when "something special" feels too wide open to start.

Anniversary Gemstones by Year

The anniversary list assigns a material to each year, and the later milestones are where gemstones take over. Our guide to anniversary jewelry gifts by year covers every year. The stone years look like this:

Anniversary Gemstone A piece that suits it
30th Pearl A strand, or a pair of pearl studs
40th Ruby Ruby earrings or a pendant
45th Sapphire A sapphire ring
55th Emerald An emerald pendant or a low-set ring
60th Diamond A diamond band

The modern list also names diamond jewelry for the tenth year, which is why so many couples add a band at that point rather than waiting six decades.

An anniversary band is the easiest way to honor a diamond year. A row of stones along the top sits comfortably beside the original wedding band and adds light without changing a ring that already means a great deal. For more shapes and widths, see our edit of the best anniversary rings.

Ruby for the Fortieth, and for Every Red-Letter Night

Ruby is the fortieth anniversary stone and the birthstone for July. It is corundum colored by chromium, and at 9 on the Mohs scale it shrugs off decades of wear. After forty years together, that seems fitting.

Red also belongs to the nights people dress up for: Valentine's Day, December parties, a big birthday dinner. Our list of Valentine's Day jewelry gifts leans on ruby for that reason. Lab-created rubies have the same chemistry and hardness as mined stones, which puts a clean, saturated red within reach of a gift budget.

Both pieces below are yellow gold, which warms the red. The studs frame an oval created ruby in lab-grown diamonds, and the pendant centers an oval ruby of 0.6 carat.

Sapphire for Weddings, the Forty-Fifth and Graduation Day

Sapphire is the forty-fifth anniversary stone and the birthstone for September. In 1981 Princess Diana chose an oval blue sapphire framed in diamonds for her engagement ring, and blue sapphire has been a romantic choice ever since.

At weddings it is the obvious answer to "something blue," whether that is a small ring or a pair of earrings borrowed from a mother. Sapphire has long been linked with faithfulness and wisdom, so it works for a graduate too. Our graduation jewelry gifts guide has more ideas for that day.

Sapphire is the same mineral as ruby, also 9 on the Mohs scale, so a sapphire ring can be worn every day from the moment it is given. It sits near the top of our list of the best gemstones for rings.

Here are two ways to wear blue. The halo ring surrounds a cushion lab-created sapphire with diamonds in white gold, made for a wedding or an anniversary. The square bezel ring wraps its sapphire in a rim of yellow gold, the protective setting we would pick for a graduate who plans to wear it daily.

Pearls and Diamonds on the Wedding Day

Pearls have been worn by brides for centuries, and they are the traditional thirtieth anniversary gift as well. A single strand at the collarbone works with almost any neckline. Pearl studs stay quiet enough that they never fight a veil. Our guide on how to choose pearl jewelry explains size, luster and length.

A practical note for the morning: pearls are soft, between 2.5 and 4.5 on the Mohs scale, and hairspray and perfume dull their nacre. Finish hair and makeup, let the spray settle, then put the pearls on last.

Diamonds cover the rest of the day, from the earrings to the wedding band itself. Natural and lab-grown diamonds are the same material, and the difference between natural and lab diamonds comes down to origin and price.

All three pieces below are white gold, so they can be worn together at the ceremony. The 16 inch strand sits at the collarbone, the 4.5mm studs stay small beside a veil, and the five-stone band carries 1/2 carat total weight of lab-grown diamonds across the top of the finger.

Emerald for the Fifty-Fifth and for Spring Celebrations

Emerald marks fifty-five years and is the birthstone for May, so it turns up at spring birthdays, Mother's Day and May weddings. Few colors are recognized as quickly as that deep green.

It also asks for more thought than ruby or sapphire. Emerald rates 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, but most stones carry inclusions and are oiled to improve clarity. A hard knock can chip one, and hot water or an ultrasonic cleaner can draw the oil out. If the gift will be worn often, a pendant or a pair of earrings is the safer home, and a ring is happiest in a low setting.

The ring below sets an oval emerald with small diamonds in yellow gold. The clover pendant pairs a created emerald with diamonds, a cheerful pick for a spring birthday.

Birthstones for Birthdays, New Babies and Mother's Day

For birthdays, the simplest rule works: give the stone of the month. Our birthstones by month guide lists all twelve, and how to choose birthstone jewelry covers settings and metals.

A new baby is a good reason to bend the rule. Instead of the mother's own birthstone, give her the child's: garnet for a January baby, amethyst for February, ruby for July. Add a stone with each later child and one piece becomes a family record. There are more ideas in our jewelry gifts for mom.

For a milestone birthday, a birthstone in real gold marks the year as one worth keeping. See our birthday jewelry gifts for her and the guide to jewelry for milestone birthdays and anniversaries.

January and February, both in yellow gold. The garnet studs hold 8x6mm oval stones, and the amethyst slide pendant sets a 6mm round stone in a bezel. Either makes a gentle first piece of fine jewelry for a new mother.

Evening Galas, Holidays and the December Calendar

December is full of dress-up evenings, and dark, saturated stones look right under candlelight. Garnet and ruby read beautifully against black and burgundy. Tanzanite, one of the December birthstones, shows blue from one angle and violet from another, and that shift suits a room lit by lamps.

For a statement, pick one color and let it lead. A pair of tanzanite earrings with a dark dress, or a garnet pendant on a short chain, says more than several stones competing for attention.

How to Choose the Right Stone for the Occasion

Start with the day. If tradition offers a stone, as anniversaries and birth months do, the gift comes with a reason that is easy to write on the card.

Then think about how the piece will live afterward. A ring that never comes off needs a hard stone such as diamond, sapphire or ruby. Pearl, emerald and opal are happier in earrings and pendants, worn for the occasion and put away after. Our guide to the Mohs scale explains the numbers.

Last, match the metal to what they already wear. Yellow gold warms red and green stones; white gold sharpens blue sapphire and diamond. If you are unsure, look at the jewelry they reach for most and follow it. Our explainer on 14k gold covers the alloy most of these pieces use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What gemstone is best for an anniversary?

It depends on the year. Pearl marks the 30th, ruby the 40th, sapphire the 45th, emerald the 55th and diamond the 60th. Diamond also appears on the modern list for the 10th year, and a diamond band suits any anniversary.

What is the traditional gemstone for a wedding?

Pearls and diamonds are the classic wedding stones. A blue sapphire, in a ring or a pair of earrings, is the traditional "something blue."

Is a birthstone a good gift for a new mother?

Yes, especially the baby's birthstone rather than her own. Garnet for January, amethyst for February or ruby for July turns a pendant or a pair of studs into a record of the birth, and more stones can be added with each child.

Which special occasion gemstones can be worn every day afterward?

Diamond, at 10 on the Mohs scale, and sapphire and ruby, at 9, handle daily wear in any piece. Pearl and emerald are better kept for occasions or worn in earrings and pendants, where they meet fewer knocks.

Are lab-created gemstones right for a special occasion?

They are. Lab-created ruby, sapphire and emerald share the chemistry and hardness of mined stones, and lab-grown diamonds are diamond. They often allow a larger or cleaner stone for the same budget.

A Stone for the Day You Want to Remember

Write the date on the card. If the piece is a band, ask a jeweler about engraving it on the inside. Ten or forty years from now, someone will turn the ring over, read the date and ask about that day.

When you are ready to choose, browse our gemstone jewelry and start with the stone that belongs to the date.
