Step by Step

Three Ways to Find Your Size

Whether you're shopping for yourself or surprising someone special, we've made finding the perfect fit effortless.

01

String or Paper Strip

The most reliable at-home method. All you need is a thin strip of paper and a ruler.

  1. Cut a thin strip of paper — about ¼ inch wide — or use a piece of string
  2. Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you plan to wear your ring on
  3. Mark the point where the paper or string overlaps with a pen
  4. Lay it flat against a ruler and measure the length in millimeters
  5. Divide that number by 3.14 to find your diameter, then match to the chart below
02

Measure an Existing Ring

If you have a ring that already fits perfectly on the correct finger, this is the fastest method.

  1. Choose a ring that fits the correct finger comfortably
  2. Place it on a ruler and measure the inner diameter — across the inside of the band
  3. Note the measurement in millimeters
  4. Find that diameter in our size chart below to identify your US ring size
  5. If your measurement falls between two sizes, we recommend sizing up

Between two sizes? Always select the larger size for everyday comfort — especially for rings worn over the knuckle. For wide bands (6mm or more), size up by one additional half-size.

Sizing Tips Worth Knowing

Measure at the End of the Day

Fingers swell slightly throughout the day from warmth and activity. Measuring in the evening gives you the most accurate everyday fit.

When Between Two Sizes, Size Up

A ring that runs slightly large can be resized down. A ring too tight is uncomfortable and risks damage. When in doubt, choose the larger half-size.

Wide Bands Fit Smaller

A band wider than 6mm sits differently on the finger and will feel tighter at the same size. For eternity bands, order one half-size up from your usual.

Dominant Hand Runs Slightly Larger

The hand you use most tends to be slightly larger due to muscle use. Always measure the specific hand and finger the ring will be worn on.

Temperature Changes Your Size

Cold weather contracts fingers; warmth expands them. Avoid measuring when hands are cold or after exercise. Room temperature is ideal.

Always Measure the Right Finger

Left and right ring fingers often differ in size. Always measure the exact finger — and hand — the ring will live on.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

When your measurement falls between two sizes, choose the larger one. Rings that run slightly large slide on comfortably and can be professionally adjusted. For wide bands — eternity rings, pavé styles, or any band over 6mm — always size up an additional half-size.
Most rings can be resized up or down by 1–2 sizes. Certain styles — including full eternity bands, channel-set rings, and some alternative metal designs — have limited or no resizing options due to their construction. We're happy to advise before you order — just reach out.
Borrow a ring they already wear on the correct finger and measure its inner diameter — or bring it to us. As a starting point, the average women's size is 6 and the average men's size is 9. Every Sophia Jewelers ring includes complimentary resizing if the fit isn't perfect.
Completely. Ring size varies widely and is influenced by height, body type, age, temperature, and genetics. There is no "normal" — only your size. We carry sizes 3 through 13 in most styles and can special-order extended sizes for select designs.
No — sizing systems vary by country. The US uses a numeric scale (3–13), the UK and Australia use an alphabetical scale (A–Z), and Continental Europe uses millimeter circumference directly. Our chart includes UK/AU equivalents for each size.
Wide bands cover more skin surface and feel snugger than thin bands at the same size. For any band 6mm or wider, order a half-size up. For bands over 10mm, consider a full size up. Our team can advise on the ideal size for any specific style.
